"He gives snow like wool;He scatters frost like ashes. He hurls down His crystals of ice like crumbs;who can stand before His cold?He sends out His word, and melts them;He makes His wind blow and the waters flow."
Psalm 147:16-18
Does it feel like you're reading about the weather in this passage, or does God illuminate a deeper truth—that He is present in every season of our lives?
New England endured an especially difficult winter. Frigid days, blizzards, long dark nights—yet even in the harshness, I could see the stillness and beauty woven throughout it all. Freshly fallen snow blanketed the earth like soft wool. Frost sparkled like glitter when the sunlight caught it just right. Icicles hung from rooftops like protective swords. Everything seemed to slow down, including us.
Our hearts experience winter too.
There are seasons that leave us frozen, weary, and even unpredictable. The loss of someone you love, a painful relationship, the battle against addiction, disappointment, or unanswered prayers can slowly harden our hearts. We continue moving through life, but inwardly we feel cold and still.
Psalm 147 asks, "Who can stand before His cold?" This isn't a question meant to be answered. It's a reminder that some seasons are simply overwhelming. There are losses we can't fix, traumas that cannot be undone, and questions we may never find answers to. Sometimes we're left feeling weak, believing we should somehow be stronger.
But Scripture tells us otherwise.
Some winters are bigger than us, just like this past year, and that's exactly when we need God the most.
Psalm 147 gently reminds us that God never abandons us in our seasons. He is fully aware of the winter because He allowed it. Nothing catches Him by surprise, and the season you're walking through has not gone unnoticed. While we don't always know how long winter will last, we can trust that God is faithfully working even when we cannot see it.
Take note of what happens every spring.
The earth begins to thaw.
Life returns.
There is always hope.
"He sends out His word and melts them." (Psalm 147:18)
It's a familiar saying, but it's true—there really is a reason for the season.
The ground rests.
Seeds quietly develop beneath the frozen earth and its blanket of snow.
Pests die off.
Trees strengthen their roots.
God often does His deepest work beneath the surface where no one else can see it. Nothing changes because we work harder. Nothing changes simply because spring arrives on its own. Everything changes because of His Word.
Just as winter gives way to spring, God can bring warmth back to your heart.
In His perfect timing, He speaks life into places that have grown cold. His Word softens what pain has hardened over time. His Spirit brings movement when everything feels stuck. Like streams flowing from melting snow, healing often begins quietly, long before anyone else notices.
Don't mistake stillness for abandonment.
Be patient. Trust the process. In time, you'll begin to see what God has been cultivating beneath the surface all along. When He speaks, the ice begins to thaw, hope begins to rise, and new life quietly emerges.
